Adoption

We are now recruiting adopters from within West Cheshire and within 60 Minutes of the border of Cheshire West. If you live in West Cheshire or within a 60 minute drive of the border, we would like to hear from you. Complete our online enquiry form and we will contact you to discuss your interest.

At the Cheshire West and Chester Adoption Service, we believe that all children have the right to a secure, stable and loving family who will be there to support them through childhood and beyond.

We are looking to recruit adopters for children and young people of all ages and in particular:

  • children over 5 years old
  • siblings
  • children with disabilities

There are many reasons why some children are no longer able to live with their birth parents or members of the birth family. So the adoption process aims to give those children a loving, stable and permanent home – with all legal responsibilities for the child or children passing to the new adoptive parents. This legal process gives you all the same rights as if you were the child’s birth parents and it is incredibly rare indeed that a child will be returned to the birth family following adoption.

Adoption is a way of providing a new family for children who cannot be brought up by their own parents. It’s a legal procedure in which all the parental responsibility is transferred to the adopters.

Our priority is to find those people who can offer children a sense of security, continuity and commitment.

We know it has taken a lot of thinking and talking with your loved ones to get to this first stage of contacting us about adoption. So you already know that you’re considering the most incredible, life-changing, exciting yet emotional time of your life. Welcoming a child or children into your heart, home and family – permanently – is a huge step. And you will want to know as much as possible about every stage of the process to make sure it’s the right decision for you. That is what this information is all about. It’s to let you look to the immediate future of what lies ahead as you take your application forward; and it’s also to let you see the amazing difference adoption can make to you, your family and to the child or children you will love and care for as your own. Please take the time to take a look at our adopter profiles to read about some first-hand experiences.

We have tried to keep everything as clear and concise as possible whilst giving you a good overview of what to expect. But please remember, if you have any further questions at all, simply give us a ring.  We are here to bring children and adoptive families together as simply and effectively as possible, and that means being here to advise, guide and support you every step of the way.

Together we can change lives

As you can imagine, adopting a child is a life changing decision. To make sure that adoption is right for you and that we find stable and secure homes for the children we care for, we will progress your application following national guidelines – changed on the 1st July 2013. We aim to support you through every step of that process as quickly as we possibly can and have a proven track record of meeting all target turnaround times that are set nationally.

Why adopt with us?

Adopt with us because…

  • We give you more – we consistently place children quicker than the national average and offer the best support at every stage.
  • We don’t delay – we can place a child in as little as five months; but we don’t push you, you set the pace that’s best for you.
  • We’re about supporting you – the variety and amount of practical, social and emotional support we offer is tailored to your individual needs, our adoptive parents tell us that’s what makes us different.
  • We’re about getting it right – our focus is on making the right match for both the child and you as the adopter. We don’t make a profit.
  • We see it through the child’s eyes – our system and process has been geared up to put the child at the heart. We’ve learned a lot over the years and by seeing it through the child’s eyes we’ve made sure the journey to a stable family life is right for them and for you.

Who are the children placed for adoption?

If you are looking to adopt a very young child we’d urge you to consider welcoming a toddler or child of age 0-4 years. In fact, many children awaiting adoption are aged 4 and over, and there are often sibling groups of brothers and sisters who need to be placed into a family home together.

Of course, some children are placed for adoption due to their complex needs – in these cases often the birth parents feel unable to provide the high levels of care and attention the child needs. And then there are children who have experienced separation, ill treatment or neglect in their first few years. We will always make you fully aware of a child’s background and help you in every way we can to understand, encourage and form a loving bond with a child who has not had the best start in life.

Whilst it is important to know about your adoptive child’s background, what we will do is work closely with you to ensure the most positive and fulfilling future for you all.

It was hard at first, of course it was, but now everything has fallen into place, we are a real family and the rewards are never ending.
